What Happened?
Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and other GLP-1 receptor agonists were prescribed to tens of millions of Americans for diabetes and weight loss. GLP-1 drugs work by slowing gastric emptying. In some patients, gastric emptying is slowed to a pathological degree — resulting in gastroparesis (stomach paralysis). Studies published in 2023 found GLP-1 users had a 9-fold higher risk of gastroparesis. Novo Nordisk (Ozempic/Wegovy) and Eli Lilly (Mounjaro) knew from internal studies about gastroparesis risk but did not adequately warn of the severity.
