What Happened?
In October 2022, the National Institutes of Health published a landmark study finding that women who used chemical hair straighteners or relaxers more than four times per year had more than double the risk of uterine cancer. These products contain endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) like phthalates, parabens, and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives that mimic estrogen. Because these products are disproportionately marketed to and used by Black women, often starting in childhood, this represents a major environmental justice issue. Manufacturers like L'Oréal, Revlon, and others failed to warn consumers of these severe health risks.
Who Qualifies?
Women who used chemical hair relaxers or straighteners (such as Dark & Lovely, Just For Me, ORS Olive Oil, Motions, etc.) regularly for at least one year (ideally 4+ times a year). You must have been diagnosed with uterine cancer, endometrial cancer, or ovarian cancer.
